Satellite-based observations reveal that the potato acreage for 2023 remains quite consistent with that of the previous year, only showing a minor decrease of approximately 2,000 ha. Simultaneously, CropRadar data indicates a reduction in acreage by roughly 10% in Bavaria, but a notable increase of approximately 5% in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Despite the challenging weather conditions in the cold and wet spring, including the rainy months of July and August, the German Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) reports a commendable 2% increase in the overall potato harvest. This result is the achievement of the farmers and a gratifying testimony to the reliability of German agricultural production. It’s noteworthy that the multi-year average for German potato harvest volumes remains stable.
